When entering Bosnia and Herzegovina foreign citizens are required to report their residence to the competent authority – the Service of Affairs with Foreigners in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
For a stay in Bosnia and Herzegovina for a few days as a tourist, registration is simple. For a stay in BiH for a longer period of time, the process of applying for a stay is complicated and depends on the type of stay and the basis on which the stay in BiH is requested.
There are four types of residence application: visa residence, visa-free residence, temporary residence and permanent residence. Within each of these stays, there are different legal grounds based on which the stay is approved and there are deadlines for certain actions as well as the right to enter and stay in the country for a total duration of up to 90 days in any period of 180 days.
Temporary residence may be granted on the basis of:
- family reunification,
- education,
- humanitarian reasons,
- work with a work permit,
- work without a work permit,
- for other justified reasons,
- ownership of immovable property if there is an effective connection with BiH
